Department of People Who Work for a Living

We’ll be ensuring the federal government works for working people and isn’t destroyed by billionaires like Elon Musk. We’ll report on the facts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts and what you can do to fight back.

Federal unions—and all unions—are under attack.

The Trump administration took its most blatantly anti-worker, anti-union action yet: an executive order stripping the right to organize from hundreds of thousands of federal workers at more than 30 agencies. If President Trump can cancel union contracts, no worker in America is safe.

STAND UP FOR VETERANS & FEDERAL WORKERS Donald Trump is coming after federal workers and veterans again. On Thursday, March 27, he signed an illegal executive order to strip nearly a million federal employees of their collective bargaining rights using "national security" as a cover. This isn’t about safety. It’s retaliation. AFGE and other federal unions have been winning in court against Trump and his billionaire allies, so now they’re trying to cut off union resources by stopping agency dues withholding. It’s an open attack on our rights, our union, and the workers who keep this country running. AND IT GETS WORSE. A leaked memo from Trump’s administration calls for the VA to cut 83,000 jobs, gutting veteran care and setting the VA up for privatization even though veterans overwhelmingly want their care at the VA. These cuts would roll back staffing levels to 2019, before Congress passed the bipartisan PACT Act, which expanded care eligibility to 700,000 more veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances. The math doesn’t lie. Fewer staff and more veterans in need means longer wait times, worse care, and a VA on the brink of collapse. We CANNOT stand by and let this happen. If you’re sick of Trump and his billionaire buddies trying to dismantle our government and attack working people, NOW is the time to take a stand. JOIN US at Spellerberg Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, right next to the VA Friday, April 25 3:00 PM Bring your friends, your family, your co-workers, and everyone who cares about protecting veterans, federal workers, and the future of the VA. We will not be silenced. We will not back down.

This year on Workers Memorial Day, April 28, we will remember workers killed, injured or made ill on the job while we “Fight for Our Lives” and demand “Safe Jobs Now!” Nearly 55 years ago, we won worker safety laws because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement. Since then, unions and allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality—winning protections under the law that have made jobs safer and saved lives. But all of that is in serious danger as elected leaders threaten to cut staff, defund or outright eliminate federal job safety agencies. We will fight for our lives in the halls of government and on the shop floor. We will fight to protect our fundamental right to a safe job. Our nation’s strength depends on safe workplaces and workers who can return home to their families at the end of each shift. We urge you to get involved this Workers Memorial Day by joining us to honor the lives lost and their loved ones.

Hands Off Medicaid Rally Medicaid funds the jobs of those who care for our loved ones in hospitals, nursing homes, and in-home care. Our nation is already facing a healthcare staffing crisis – slashing the funding for nursing home workers, home care providers, and hospital workers will make this crisis worse. It also funds the jobs of public service workers who provide social services, benefits services, education services and more. Federal Medicaid dollars are critical to state budgets, funding on average nearly 30% a state's budget, and paying for the services that keep communities running like special education, K-12 services, in-home care for seniors and people with disabilities, and mental health services.

Join us at 10am on Monday, April 28th in Raleigh for a press conference and solemn memorial service during which participants will toll a bell 177 times - once for each person in North Carolina who died while working for a better life in 2023 - and will renew our fight for strong safety and health protections. Together on Workers' Memorial Day, we raise our collective voices to win stronger safety and health protections in our workplaces and stronger job safety and health laws. We hold employers accountable to keep workers safe. We demand action on critical safety and health protections against preventable workplace hazards. **Workers Memorial Day Ceremony** Monday, April 28th at 5:30pm Wyoming State Capitol Steps, Cheyenne For more than 20 years, Wyoming has consistently ranked among the worst states in the nation for workplace fatalities. In 2023 alone, 45 Wyoming workers never made it home—up from 34 the previous year. Join us as we honor those who have lost their lives on the job with a solemn bell ceremony commemorating each individual. Together, we'll demand meaningful action to protect Wyoming workers. **Event Program:** - Opening prayer - Workers' testimonies including: - Marshall Cummings, miner fighting for federal safety regulations in silica mines - Additional Wyoming workers sharing their experiences and concerns - Call to action by Marcie Kindred, Executive Director of the Wyoming State AFL-CIO - Concluding bell ceremony honoring each worker lost - Closing prayer We're tired of holding this memorial year after year with no improvement. Behind every statistic is a Wyomingite whose family is suffering in near silence. The fines for safety violations are insufficient to deter dangerous working conditions, and there's little enforcement of compliance. This Workers Memorial Day, we mourn for the dead and fight for the living. No more lip service or empty condolences—we demand action for safe workplaces in Wyoming!

Monday, April 28, 11:30AM-12:30PM: Join the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) for our annual Workers’ Memorial Day commemoration to honor those who have died or suffered injuries or illnesses while on the job, to recognize the sacrifices made by all essential workers on the front lines, and to renew the fight for strong safety and health protections. We will come together with union members, advocates, and allies to demand safer workplaces, stronger enforcement of labor protections, and accountability for employers who put workers at risk. Let’s stand in solidarity to ensure that no worker is forced to sacrifice their health or their life for a paycheck. Workers' Memorial Day Roanoke Event

Details

Join union members, labor leaders, elected officials and allies as we gather at Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial in downtown Roanoke for a Workers Memorial Day event, to remember those who have died and suffered illnesses or injuries on the job—including Virginians—in the past year. The event will feature speakers sharing how workers and the labor movement won safety protections over time by demanding the government hold corporations accountable to protect workers on the job and organizing for safer working conditions. Speakers will also highlight how hard-won progress is at serious risk as President Trump threatens to cut staff, defund or outright eliminate federal job safety agencies, which would have critical effects on Virginia's funding and our working people

Share your story

We are collecting stories from workers and working families who are affected by the Trump administration’s new policies.

We want to hear from you: How do these new policies impact your job? How do they impact the government funding and services that matter to you, your family and your community?

Worker Safety

Tell Congress to Stop the Cuts to NIOSH

NIOSH researches worker exposures to heat and wildfire smoke, workplace violence, back injuries and other chronic diseases, and state-of-the-art technologies that keep workers safe in mines.

Issues

Navigate the issues below to learn how unelected billionaires and their agenda is affecting working people.

Federal Workers

Federal workers are the heart of our government, ensuring that critical services like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Department of Veterans Affairs, disaster relief and national defense run smoothly. They run our national parks, inspect our food and medicine, and keep us safe from crime, accidents and disasters.

Cuts to the federal workforce jeopardize these services, affecting millions of Americans who rely on the government to protect and secure their well-being.

Immigration

One in five workers in America wasn’t born here. Immigrants are America’s workers, vital to the fabric of our communities, our economy and our labor movement.

The labor movement supports comprehensive immigration reform that fully protects America’s workers, reduces the exploitation of immigrant workers and reduces employers’ incentive to hire undocumented workers rather than U.S. workers. But stoking fear about immigrants, raiding schools and hospitals, and mass deporting people whose labor makes our country prosper is not only a betrayal of our values—it’s also a recipe for economic disaster.

Labor Law

President Trump has effectively shut down the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

The NLRB—usually led by five board members—holds union elections, investigates allegations, and resolves cases of wrongdoing brought by workers, unions or employers.

The president illegally fired a member of the labor board, Gwynne Wilcox—the first Black woman to serve on the NLRB. There are now only two sitting members of the board, which leaves it one member short of the minimum number needed for any decision-making. And by firing Wilcox, because he didn’t like her decisions, he destroyed the board’s independence.

Tax and Budget Policy

Proposed Spending Cuts Would Cut Workers’ Health Care and Jobs to Pay for Tax Cuts for the Rich

Budgets are about more than just dollars and cents listed on a spreadsheet—budgets are about our values. We saw Trump’s budget priorities during his last administration: billions in proposed cuts to Social Security. Billions in proposed cuts to Medicaid. Billions in proposed cuts to public schools. Billions in proposed cuts to food assistance programs.

At the same time, the last Trump administration had plenty of money for a tax bill in 2017 that delivered trillions of dollars in special tax breaks to billionaires and giant corporations. Now the Trump administration is looking to make those tax breaks for the rich and powerful permanent in 2025.

Where in the U.S. are government workers?

Where do government workers live? The answer may surprise you. While many assume most federal workers are based in the Washington, D.C., area, 85% of federal employees live throughout the country, with large concentrations in states like California, Texas, Florida and Georgia. Cuts would be felt nationwide, hurting local economies and services.

About one-third of federal workers are military veterans who continue to serve our country in these roles. Cuts to the federal workforce would immediately put thousands of veterans out of work.
